Chandra Shekhar Shaha
Born in April 1955 in Chittagong, Chandra Shekhar Shaha got his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from the Dhaka Arts & Crafts Institute (now known as the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of Dhaka), and later another degree in Textile Design from the National Institute of Design, India.
Chandra Shekhar is one of the pathfinders in modern crafting and textile design in Bangladesh. Almost all the young leaders in contemporary designing arena are his disciples. The top notched fashion houses in Bangladesh have had his magic touch in their growth.
Starting his professional career with Aarong in 1980 spending around two decades, he worked for many local and overseas organisations as a freelance consultant. He has been involved in the Executive Committee of the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh for last fifteen years. Now he is chairing the Council.
The ancient proverb “Tourism is the most interesting way of acquiring knowledge” has driven him around the globe to understand and experience the people, art, culture, etc of different communities in the world, and to further enrich himself as a global citizen. These knowledge and experiences are reflected in his creation. Modernity with a deep connection with the heritage is his hallmark.
His bilingual book “Behind the Product” jointly written with Mashrur Mamun Mithun was published by Design and Technology Centre (DTC) with the support from German development organisation GTZ. Besides, the publication of another book “Sandesher Olongkrito Chhanch” that is inspired by the moulds of sandesh, a local variety of sweetmeat.
He is deeply engaged in developing more and more disciples and students. He professes in the Shanto- Mariam University of Creative Technology and North South University. In addition, he takes part in different seminars, symposia and workshops on design and handicrafts both at home and abroad. He was given Lifetime Achievement Award by Saptahik 2000 and Fortnightly Anyadin.
